(a spinoff from the Pursuit. trilogy; see further below). At the end of the trilogy, Maim discovered his sadistic erotic tendencies. Maim traipses about the western lands (late 1800s in the western USA) to become more familiar with his newly revealed and tenacious proclivity.

His name is Maim. Her name is Maude. She paid for Maim but never received title. She figures she owns him anyway. He doesn't agree. (This trilogy launched Vern Harrison's author career.)
